State Produce Grants: Aiming Higher

State Produce Grants
State Produce Grants

The Houston Food Bank and Feeding Texas working together to acquire surplus produce.

Feeding Texas food banks will work together in the upcoming 2017 session of the Texas Legislature to increase state funds for the Surplus Produce Grant located within the Texas Department of Agriculture’s budget. This money is used by food banks to acquire surplus produce in order to fuel produce dependent programs, such as Food for Change. We will request $22M for the Surplus Agriculture Grant. In the last session, we asked for $20M and got $6M. With overall budget funding already being cut, we know this ask will be a challenge but one that is worthy of the effort. The Houston Food Bank and Feeding Texas have already been meeting with members of the State’s Legislative Budget Board to introduce our ask.
