f.r.e.s.h. Celebrates Two Years

In the two years since f.r.e.s.h. began, the socially conscious group has made an impact in fighting hunger within our community.

f.r.e.s.h. young professionals launched in June 2014 to support the mission of the Houston Food Bank. In these two years the group led by an 11 person board and 120 socially conscious members has made an impact.  In the last year the f.r.e.s.h. Board and committee members planned 12 events that brought awareness to the issue of hunger, raised funds, and of course made a difference while being FUN!

Five of the events focused on volunteering at the Food Bank.  The group organized “Helpie Hours” a combination of volunteering and networking. The group logged over 1,500 volunteer hours.

Educational events comprised three of the events. The Hunger Dinner at IKEA gave the 80 guests an eye-opening experience about hunger in Houston. The Houston Press’ Phaedra Cook was in attendance and summed up the event nicely. Mission focused events were rounded out by a tour of CANstruction and Cooking with a Cause, a cooking demo event that showcased the Food Bank’s Kids Cafe program.

The group held a number of socials at various Houston venues and held a successful Mardi Gras Gumbo Cook Off in February. To date the group has raised enough money to provide over 165,000 meals to the hungry in our community.

The Food Bank is thrilled to have these engaged young professionals leading the fight against hunger. To get involved or learn more visit: http://www.houstonfoodbank.org/get-involved/fresh-young-professionals
