Texans Cooking Matters

Most low income families think it’s important to eat healthy food, but only about half are able to make healthy meals on a regular basis. The Cooking Matters program, supported locally by the Houston Texans, offers the skills these families need to make healthy, affordable meals at home.

In early March, attendees of the Cooking Matters class prepared a healthy recipe from the Houston Texans Cookbook, and also got a special visit from Houston Texan Jon Weeks (position: long snapper) and his wife Amanda. The group also learned how to make the Weeks's recipe for Zucchini Panko Fries. Houston Food Bank provided healthy groceries for the attendees to take home in a Houston Texans reusable grocery tote.

The Cooking Matters curriculum, provided by Share Our Strength, helps families maximize the benefits they receive through SNAP (Supplement Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly food stamps) and WIC (Women, Infants and Children), both federal hunger relief programs.

Nutrition Education Program

Houston Food Bank nutrition educators travel to partner agencies to teach classes tailored to the needs of a variety of groups, including seniors, children, teens, mothers and babies, pregnant moms, healthy adults, and people with AIDS. Classes revolve around the USDA My Plate and Healthy Guidelines for American with support of the American Heart Association and American Diabetes Association, among others.
