kNOw Poverty Summit

2.2016

On Thursday, Jan. 28, Catholic Charities hosted the 2nd Annual kNOw Poverty Summit, at the campus of University of St. Thomas. The conference was sponsored and underwritten by CHI St. Luke’s Health, in collaboration with community partners Children at Risk, San Jose Clinic, St. Vincent DePaul, The Metropolitan Organization, The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, Generation One, Loving Houston, University of St. Thomas and Houston Food Bank. Approximately 190 people were in attendance. The summit focus was on identifying and addressing issues related to poverty, with an emphasis on education, community outreach and food insecurity.  Opening remarks were given by Catholic Charities CEO and President Cynthia Colbert and UST President Dr. Robert Ivany.

The keynote speaker was Dr. Shane Lopez, the world’s leading researcher on the subject of hope and how it can be learned and spread to others. Dr. Lopez shared several inspiring stories of people who, through a foundation based on hope, were able to create better lives for themselves, their families and their communities.

A unique facet of the conference was the afternoon portion which was devoted to what actions attendees could take once they left for the day. Sometimes even withthe most informative conferences, there can be a gap between learning and being inspired to go out and do more and knowing how to that. The attendees were able to identify specific initiatives they wanted to be a part of going forward and will then be contacted by planning committee member regarding next steps.

A very special thanks to Matt Johns, Director of Mission Integration Programs at Catholic Charities, who spear-headed the conference and coordinated the efforts of the community partners.
