Houston Food Bank

Core Specialists Needed

Many children who rely on free or reduced-priced lunches during the school year go home to meager or no meals on the weekends. The Houston Food Bank’s Backpack Buddy Program works to fill that gap with food sacks full of healthy, nonperishable child-friendly food for the weekend.  A new policy requires all schools to be audited, and the Food Bank is looking for volunteers to help monitor our Backpack Buddy schools.  This is where our Core Specialists come in!

Core Specialists are skilled volunteers who donate their time to the Houston Food Bank. We are recruiting these volunteers to be Backpack Buddy Monitors.  Backpack Buddy Monitors will work closely with program coordinators to ensure all of our participating schools are audited and can continue to receive and distribute food to kids in our community.

We ask our volunteers to commit to 2-3 school visits a month during school hours.  Each visit takes about 20 minutes, and more than one school can be audited in a day.  Training will be provided by the Backpack Buddy Program Coordinators at the Portwall Warehouse before you visit a school to ensure you have all the tools you need to complete a successful audit.
