Summer Feeding Impact

During the summer months, our Keegan Kitchen Summer Feeding Program was in full production. Typically during this time of year, children lose access to the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), which may have been their only source of food for the day. In the summer of 2013, 71,359 meals were served to children, and last summer the Keegan Kitchen provided 93,355 HOT meals, 85,961 snacks to children. This summer we were excited to add an additional meal of breakfast, which allowed us to provide 216,000 meals in total averaging to about 54,000 meals a week, nearly doubling last year’s totals! We couldn’t have done it without your help!

With the Summer Feeding Program coming to a close, our Kid’s Café program will be kicking off for the new approaching school year and your help is still needed to help us prepare those meals. The minimum age requirement for volunteers is 16, and the dress code is closed-toe shoes, long pants, sleeved shirts and no jewelry. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Angela Loving at aloving@houstonfoodbank.org
