Houston Food Bank

Thank you, Houston Texans!

DHopkins2.jpgBy now, you’ve probably heard that DeAndre Hopkins, Houston Texans Wide Receiver, has agreed to be the 2014 spokesperson for the Houston Food Bank and the Houston campaign for Souper Bowl of Caring. It was truly an honor to meet and talk with this remarkable young man and hear his story of overcoming his childhood circumstances to fulfill his dream of getting to the NFL. We couldn’t be more thrilled to have his representing the Food Bank this year!

What you might not know is that this is just the latest occurrence in a long-standing partnership between the Houston Food Bank and the Houston Texans. If you’ve had a chance to visit our Portwall warehouse since we opened in 2011, you’ve probably stopped by the Houston Texans Cafe at some point since it is a favorite spot for volunteers and building visitors. The cafe offers snacks and complimentary beverages as well as a comfortable location during volunteer breaks. Depending on when you were here, you might have also encountered Texans players, Cheerleaders, staff and fans working side by side at the Food Bank, packaging and sorting food, as they do several times a year.

SBOC_1.JPGIn just a few weeks, on November 3rd, the Food Bank will again benefit from Taste of the Texans. Now in its fifth year, the event raises more than $350,000 each year to be split between the Houston Food Bank, Houston Texans Foundation and Houston Methodist Hospital. Attendees will mix and mingle with Texans players, Ambassadors and Cheerleaders while sampling treats from more than 25 of the finest restaurants in Houston. For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit the Houston Texans website.

Toro1.JPGMany people also don’t realize that in 2004, Janice and Bob McNair and the Houston Texans were the first NFL owners and team to support Souper Bowl of Caring, a nationwide, grassroots movement of caring utilizing the weekend of the big game to mobilize youth to fight hunger and poverty in their local communities. Or that the wives and significant others of the Texans coaches and players come together each  December to raise food and funds during the Lady Texans Food Drive, which provided nearly 5,000 additional meals just last year.

The example the Texans set in caring and giving back to our community is very admirable. We are lucky to have them as community partners and have fun rooting them on…as we know you do too. GO TEXANS!
