Tenth anniversary of Empty Bowls Houston a success

Empty Bowls provides 240,000 meals for people in need

Empty Bowls crowd 2014Close to 800 people gathered at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft on Saturday, May 17, to support the 10th anniversary of Empty Bowls. For a $25 donation, guests selected a hand-crafted bowl and received a simple meal of soup and bread provided by Whole Foods Market - and with over 2,600 bowls at the event, there were plenty to choose from. It was a picture-perfect day so many families and friends stuck around for music while enjoying iced drinks from Katz Coffee and delicious popsicles from GoodPop.

EB7.JPGEmpty Bowls Houston is a grassroots event that brings together artists throughout the Houston area to raise awareness for those in our community who go without food on a daily basis. Artists and students designed and donated bowls to symbolize the empty bowls people face every day. Through its first nine years, Empty Bowls Houston has raised more than $410,000 for the Houston Food Bank, providing more than 1.23 million meals for the hungry in the Food Bank's 18-county service area whose bowls would otherwise be empty. This year's event raised enough money to serve another 240,000 meals!

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of Empty Bowls in Houston, the Empty Bowls Steering Committee invited a number of the area's finest craft artists who have significantly supported Empty Bowls Houston through the years to create unique bowls incorporating the theme of "10." Thirty-two artists responded enthusiastically, created pieces with the theme of "10" embedded through ten nested bowls, ten facets, ten stitches, ten scallops, among other approaches. These finely crafted, one-of-a-kind bowls made from clay, wood, glass and fiber, were displayed in a special exhibition - "Empty Bowls: 10 Years of Hope through Art - A Special Exhibition and Silent Auction by the Craft Community and Archway Gallery Artists" - at Archway Gallery through May 31. All proceeds benefited the Houston Food Bank.

Thank you to our 2014 sponsors: Whole Foods Market; Archway Gallery; Ceramic Store; Coldwell Bankers United, Realtors; Good Pop; Houston Center for Contemporary Craft; Katz Coffee; LD Systems; The Mad Potter; and Waste Management.
