Houston Food Bank introduces "Helpie"

Selfies...for good!

Everyone is familiar with the ever-popular “selfie,” made even more popular by Ellen DeGeneres at the this year's Oscar ceremony when she went into the crowd and took a photo with other celebs.  Houston Food Bank happens to think the true celebrities are people who give generously of their time to help others, including those who volunteer at our warehouse and commercial kitchen to help feed the hungry in our community.

Houston Food Bank is encouraging volunteers to take and share a #Helpie (a selfie snapped while volunteering and helping others) on social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Sorting food from food drives?  Snap a #Helpie

Packing bags for the Backpack Buddy program?  Snap a #Helpie

Preparing hot meals at the Keegan Kitchen for children’s afterschool programs?  Yup, snap a #Helpie!

And don’t forget to tag Houston Food Bank:

“Posting a #Helpie will help shine a light – even if for a moment – on everyday people who make a huge difference in our organization and our community,” says Perry McAfee, director of Volunteer Engagement.  “We cannot express how important volunteers are to the Houston Food Bank being able to complete its mission to feed the hungry.  Volunteers provide approximately 5,300 hours of service to our organization each week, work that we could not afford to pay for and which is crucial to us.  We cannot thank them enough!”

Houston Food Bank hopes that the #Helpie will be picked up and shared across the globe!
