Stamp Out Hunger with NALC Food Drive

National Association of Letter Carriers to collect donations on May 10

NALC Stamp Out Hunger logoEach year on the second Saturday in May, letter carriers across America participate in the NALC Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive – the largest one-day food drive in the nation. Led by letter carriers represented by the National Association of Letter Carriers (AFL-CIO), with help from rural letter carriers, other postal employees and other volunteers, the drive has delivered more than one billion pounds of food the past 21 years.

On May 10, hundreds of thousands of letter carriers, retirees, family members and volunteers will take to mail routes in every state and territory across America to pick up sacks of non-perishable food and deliver the goods to the food banks and pantries that serve their local communities.

To donate, just place a box, bag or can of non-perishable food items next to or inside your mailbox before your letter carrier delivers mail on May 10. If your mailbox is too small, leave your donation underneath or by the central mailbox unit. The food is then sorted and delivered to an area food bank or pantry, where it is available for families in need.

With more than 50 million people facing hunger every day in America, and Houston Food Bank feeding nearly 137,000 people a week, this drive is one way you can get involved in the fight against hunger!

“Food banks and shelters usually benefit from an upswing in charitable donations during the winter holiday season,” NALC president Fredric Rolando said. “By springtime, however, their stocks tend to dwindle to critically low levels. Helping local support organizations deal with this post-holiday lull in donations is the main reason we hold our national drive on the second Saturday in May.”
