Food for Thought Luncheon Nov 2014 E-Newsletter Food for Thought Luncheon
This year's luncheon honored ABC-13, one of the Houston Food Bank's oldest and dearest friends, with the Barbara Falik Humanitarian Award for their longstanding commitment to hunger relief in the Houston area. Being recognized for the annual Share Your Holidays Food Drive, the media event generates hundreds of thousands of pounds of food and dollars each year that provide holiday meals for many thousands of families who live in or on the edge of poverty.
Among other issues, panel members discussed their partnerships with the Houston Food Bank, the extent to which hunger affects their constituents, and the challenge of - and local response to - food deserts in Houston and Harris County. The discussion was followed by a spirited question and answer session which demonstrated the panel members' commitment to efforts to reduce hunger among our community's children and their families. We are so grateful to Congressman Green, Judge Emmett and Councilman Costello for lending their time and expertise to this year's luncheon and to Mary Dee for her leadership of the event. Thank you, also, to the many sponsors and attendees who made it a great success.

Chair Mary Dee Neal gathered with nearly 200 guests at the Food for Thought Luncheon at The Junior League of Houston on Tuesday, October 28th. The event raised more than $130,000 for the Houston Food Bank.
In addition to the awards presentation, guests heard from an informative group of panelist including U.S. Congressman Gene Green, Harris County Judge Ed Emmett and Houston City Councilman Stephen Costello. Respected ABC-13 News Anchor Dave Ward served as the moderator for the group. During the panel, the speakers explored some enormously complicated issues including hunger, its many causes and their recommendations for action.
