Five volunteer leaders recognized
On February 22, the Houston Food Bank acknowledged the hard
work and dedication of its volunteer elite: the Apple Corps Leaders. These
volunteers go above and beyond the requirements of the Apple Corps program, a
team of volunteers who commit at least four hours of time each month to
volunteering at the Food Bank. The second annual Apple Corps Leader Recognition
Dinner highlighted five volunteers who have established a new standard for all
Apple Corps members to follow:
Mariana Rivero is a full-time
student at the University of Houston. Mariana started volunteering with the HFB
at our Keegan Kitchen location before becoming an Apple Corps Leader. Her
commitment and dedication not only shows in her work ethic, but also in during
speaking engagements and food fairs, where she acts as a volunteer representative
of the Food Bank. Mariana has also brought her family to volunteer with us
during the Share Your Holidays for two years in a row.
Joan Jones works directly at the Emergency
Food Pantry and in our Donor Services department. She recently became the
executive director for the Dayton Community Food Pantry in Dayton, Texas, and
her passion to serve our community shows every Thursday when she comes to
volunteer with us.
Jon Burgus and Deanna Minor are one
of a few Apple Corps Leader couples that are a part of the Apple Corps team,
and their commitment to the Food Bank is incredible. Jon and Deanna are retired
from Shell and chose the Food Bank to volunteer with on a weekly basis. They
provide support for the Scan-A-Can program, in which volunteers sort product
donated through food and fund drives, among other projects.
Jim Day is a dedicated volunteer
that has led many projects, including our Backpack Buddy program. His
determination for perfection has shown through all the observations, processes,
and suggestions that he has shared with us over the last year. His dedication
and passion are exemplary, and he makes sure that all of our volunteers have a
great experience when they come to the Food Bank.
Rebecca Pellegrini was chosen as
the Apple Corps Leader of the year for 2013. Becky’s passion and dedication to
our mission are endless. She has volunteered in many parts of the Food Bank,
including the Emergency Food Pantry, Volunteer Production, Volunteer
Engagement, and Donor Services, as well as at many events outside our facility.
Becky truly embodies several of the qualities that the Food Bank strives for, and
is an asset to our organization.
